Discuss with Dina: Celebrity Clothing Cult

According to WWD, Nicole Richie will be coming out with her 3rd collection this spring. This time around, it's a 37 piece contemporary line called Winter Kate. This collection is inspired by Richie's own style, with the bohemian 60's and 70's twist. She has already come out with a jewelry and maternity line which seem to have done well thus far.

I like Nicole's style, I really do-but it's everywhere. The Celeb Clothing Line Cult.  Queen Latifah just launched her new fragrance Queen, Lauren Conrad, Miley Cirus, Jennifer Lopez , Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Amanda Bynes, Kanye, P-Diddy aka Puff aka Mr. I -don't -know what- to- call- you- anymore so I will go by Sean Combs, Lauren Bush (as in the former president's daughter) Will.i.am, Fergie, Beyonce, L.Lohan, Justin Timberlake, The Olsen twins  -all have clothing lines or some type of collaboration with a line. (ahem, Madonna for Ed Hardy) Bet you didn't know queen of country singing Reba McEntire had a clothing line too. Go ahead, check it out.

THE LIST GOES ON AND ON.

With the exception of a select, and I mean select few, most of these lines just don't tickle my fancy-yes, I just said tickle my fancy. By celebrity , I don't mean well known fashion designer such as Marc Jacobs or Vera Wang- No, I mean actor/actress/singer/musician/reality star gone "designer."

Anymore, when I think of a celeb collection, I think of over priced, overly trendy, cheaply made items. I adore, just adore Lauren Conrad's personal style, and was actually pretty excited to see what she had to offer for Kohl's and it was a huge disappointment, both for prices and style.Oh and remember Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker's sold at Steve and Barry's?  Need I say anymore?

I just think it's being over done, to the point of tackiness. It's almost become like a competition for celebrities to see who can come out with the next clothing line or perfume. I feel like these lines appeal to younger people more than anything. What do you think? If I were a respected, successful, talented designer-I'd almost be offended by all of these "designs" celebrities are making millions off of. Bare with me, because I'm probably being a little too critical, especially since I usually don't end up buying anything from these lines.

Beyonce's House of Dereon

Are you sick of celeb collections? Which ones do you love, hate, love to hate, or even have a love hate with? (say that 10 times fast)

Lindsey Lohan recently came out with her 6126 leggings line. 6126 referring to Marilyn Monroe's 6/1/26 birthday. These lacey bad boys cost $110. Hmm, not so much Linds.

Rachel Bilson has great style. There is no doubt about that. She recently teamed up with DKNY to launch her edie rose line. She admits to not drawing any of the sketches, although she's learning to sew. The line, Bilson adds is inspired by her own closet. Bilson's closet? Take me on a field trip! (Source and photo)

Oh Tara. Please, spare us the bikinis and beads.

Jessica Simpson's line I don't mind so much. Although I don't own any of her items, I've come across some stunning shoes and functional bags for decent prices at TJ Maxx and Marshall's.

Oh Lauren, what a let down.

Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface
Ok, that's a really bad picture, and extreme. Pictured right is a picture from the Sweetface website.

You know...I can kind of understand celebs and the reasoning behind coming up with their own clothing line, perfume, etc, etc. From a business point of view, that's where they really make all the money. So, why not make some $$$ while the fame lasts. I know I would:) Plus, it's fun for them, right?

yeah its become a bit much to keep up with! I'll pay attention if it's where I shop--like Target but I probably wouldn't rush out and buy something just b/c of the name. Great post!

I get annoyed by celeb lines as well, but I"m guessing their reasoning is that fans of theirs will buy anything they release, whether it's a movie, CD or perfume. I think their real targets aren't necessarily fashion lovers, but their own fans. Having said that, I think the fashion market is already oversaturated and having these non-designers bring out their own sub-par lines isn't helping, especially if there are tons of struggling yet talented designers out there waiting for their big break.

As much as she can annoy me, Victoria B has great style and her line is actually quite chic. But again, if I think how easy it was for her to get her own runway show and how many designers, who've been doing their thing for years can only dream of getting the funding and showing their collections in that scale, it is quite saddening.

I don't really pay much attention to celebrity collections because they are always overpriced just to have their name on it.

I usually ignore celebrity lines. If they're not available where I shop, then they don't really mean anything to me. I like to create my own style; I see no point in completely taking the look of a particular celebrity simply because they make it available to me. :/

As much as I adore Lauren Conrad, I will admit that her lines have never been fantastic. The Kohl's line wasn't anything exciting. Her own collection had some nice pieces, but it was extremely overpriced for what it was. If I knew how to sew, I could have made those same dresses easily.

I don't mind Jessica Simpson's shoe line. I have nothing negative to say about it. I only have one pair of heels from her line and I love them.

Lindsay Lohan is probably the one that irritates me the most. I don't understand why she would be designing clothes and leggings? Her personal style is nothing spectacular, in my opinion. (Plus, that Emmanuel Ungaro collection was a total disaster.)

And there's another celebrity you can add to the list... Whitney Port. (Formerly on The Hills. Now on The City.) She has a clothing line as well.

Lindsay's collection... I totally dislike.

Rachel Bilson's... I love.

Hope Nicole Richie's collection will be fabulous. I love her style.

I'm quite excited for Nicole's collection. I LOVE House of Harlow! The other ones...eh. Although R Bil...if it's based on her closet, I'm there!

I'm not a big fan of celebrity lines. They seem to either crash and burn or stick around much too longer than they should. I'd like to see Nicole prove me wrong though...

I feel the same way - not a big fan. Actually if I see that it has a celebrity's name, I won't buy it. =/

I don't think anyone is more irriated by these lines than I am! I used to actually look forward to them if it was someone I like, but now I don't even pay any attention to them at all. I will say that I agree about jessica simpson, her shoes and bags are super cute for the most part. I also love Nicole Richie, but I probably won't end up buying anything unless it is super spectacular.
